THE PROJECT
Catalonia OpenDoors is an annual 4-day event around April 23, Sant Jordi Day, the Day of the Rose and the Book in the Països Catalans. During these days, the country will open its doors to citizens from around the world who are interested in exploring the reality of Catalonia. Many Catalan families will host our guests in their homes. In addition, our guests will enjoy an extensive social program during their stay.
Grass-roots diplomacy
One of the aims of grass-root diplomacy is to encourage personal acquaintances through trips and shared travels. We want to create conversational spaces for talks in family or friendship settings and international working groups that promote open and supportive attitudes. We believe that these voluntary citizen-to-citizen interactions away from the constraints and pressures of belonging to any political party, are central for building fair and friendly societies as well as promoting the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
We promote the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
In 2015, the United Nations created the Sustainable Development Goals: a set of 17 goals to ensure fair world development involving all countries and companies to make this possible. Catalonia OpenDoors takes part in this project as well, making our event align with 10 of the 17 goals proposed by the United Nations. Discover them all and join us in this initiative!
Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and quality education for everybody and promote lifelong learning.
With the annual Catalonia OpenDoors event, we unveil the richness of our territory, opening our doors to anyone who wants to learn our language, history and culture.
Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
We want the OpenDoors project to be inclusive and guarantee equality between men and women within our association and during the preparations of our project.
Goal 8: Foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth and employment, and providing decent work for everyone.
One of the activities organized for this year’s OpenDoors is a guided visit to the La Fageda Factory, to show the great work done by people with disabilities, thereby promoting their visibility.
Goal 10: Reduce inequality within countries and between countries.
With the OpenDoors project we open our borders to the people of all countries, giving us the opportunity to get to know more about each other and establish synergies that benefit equality between all.
Goal 11: Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
We believe that the specific choice of Girona is the best example: a city of sustainable dimensions and with an incredible cohesion between its inhabitants with firm and shared values.
Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production models.
During the event we will use public transportation and fill our cars with the maximum number of people, reducing the number of vehicles used and their pollution.
Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.
We want to emphasize the importance of the Mediterranean Sea by visiting the different areas of the Costa Brava while looking for solutions that help in the conservation of its marine fauna.
Goal 15: Promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, combat desertification, halt and reverse soil degradation, and halt the loss of biodiversity.
Our land is rich in Natural Spaces and Ecologic Parks. Through a guided visit to these areas, we want to show the present state of these ecosystems and make participants aware of their importance for the planet.
Goal 16: Promote just, peaceful, and inclusive societies.
A more just, peaceful, and inclusive society is accomplished through revealing the reality of each country. The Catalonia OpenDoors 2020 event will effectively promote this objective among all the persons who take part in it.
Goal 17: Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
The key objective of Catalonia OpenDoors is to establish connections and create strategic alliances between countries. We seek solutions to the current problems within our society, including the goals of sustainable development.
